Eye care services in West Bromwich
Everything we offer at our Stone Cross practice, from free NHS eye tests to urgent appointments for sore or red eyes.
NHS and private eye tests
An eye test checks far more than whether you need glasses. We use modern technology to get a clear picture of the health of your eyes, and keep records so we can spot small changes from one visit to the next.
That means conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic eye disease can be picked up early, often before you notice anything yourself. If something needs a closer look, we’ll arrange extra tests or write to your GP.
- Diabetic eye screening by a trained screener
- Visual field, eye pressure and slit lamp checks when you need them
- Referral letters for your GP or hospital
Could your eye test be free?
Lots of people in West Bromwich qualify for a free NHS eye test without realising. Tick anything that applies to you.
Not eligible? We also offer private eye tests, and the check-up is just as thorough.
Tick any that apply
If none do, you can still book a private eye test. Call us and we’ll tell you the price.

Book my free eye testUrgent eye care (CUES)
We’re a registered CUES (Community Urgent Eyecare Service) practice, so if something suddenly goes wrong with your eyes, we can see you quickly through the NHS instead of you waiting for a GP appointment.
CUES isn’t an eye test, and it doesn’t cover long-standing or major eye conditions you’re already being treated for.
For a serious eye injury or chemicals in the eye, go straight to A&E.
Call us if you have
- A red or painful eye or eyelid
- New flashes or floaters
- Recent, sudden loss of vision
- Something stuck in your eye
Children’s eye tests and glasses
Children are entitled to free NHS eye tests until they’re 16, and until 19 if they’re in full-time education. Regular checks matter: children rarely tell you when they can’t see properly.
We also dispense hospital prescriptions. If your child has been seen at the eye clinic, bring the prescription in and we’ll measure, supply and fit small frames for any age, including babies and toddlers.
- Free NHS eye tests for under-16s
- Hospital prescriptions made up and fitted
- Lots of colours and styles, so they’ll want to wear them
Contact lenses
No one lens fits everyone. We’ll check your vision and the shape and health of your eyes, then recommend the lens that suits your eyes and the way you live, from daily disposables to RGP (rigid gas permeable) lenses.
Our specially trained staff fit your lenses and show you how to put them in, take them out and look after them, until you’re confident doing it yourself.
- Lens fitting with a specialist contact lens dispenser
- RGP lenses as well as soft lenses

Bone conduction hearing specs
Hearing specs have bone conduction hearing aid technology built into the arms of the glasses. Sound travels through the bone behind your ear, so nothing sits inside the ear canal.
They’re usually recommended by hospitals such as West Park, and suit people who get infections from in-ear hearing aids. We make sure the arms are the right length, fit your lenses, and check the conduction sits correctly on the mastoid bone.

How often should I have an eye test?
Most adults should have an eye test every two years. Children, people over 70, and anyone with diabetes or a family history of glaucoma may need them more often. Your optometrist will tell you when to come back.
Do you see children?
Yes. Eye tests for under-16s are free on the NHS, and we can make up glasses from hospital prescriptions, with small frames in lots of colours and styles.
Can I come in with an urgent eye problem?
Call us first on 0121 588 6163. We’re a CUES practice, so we can see red or painful eyes, new flashes or floaters, sudden changes in vision and foreign bodies in the eye through the NHS.
Can I order contact lenses by phone?
Yes. Once you’ve been fitted, you can order lenses pay as you go, in store or over the phone.
